Arne Bengtson obtained a PhD in ”laser spectroscopy at fast ion beams” from the University of Uppsala in 1979. In 1980 – 81 he did a postdoc at the University of Heidelberg in laser spectroscopy. Returning to Sweden in late 1981, he joined the Swedish Institute for Metals Research (SIMR) as a senior researcher. He immediately started work on depth profile analysis with GD-OES leading to a method for fully quantitative evaluation of GD-OES depth profiles in 1989. Since then Bengtson has been very active in the field of GD-OES, and more recently has also become a LIBS expert.
