The 2019 European Award for Plasma Spectrochemistry, sponsored by the Agilent Technologies with an amount of 6,000 EUR.

The prize, which promotes analytical plasma spectrochemical developments and applications in Europe, will be presented at the European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry in Pau, France on February 3, 2019.

The European Award for Plasma Spectrochemistry is awarded for a single outstanding piece of work or for continued important contributions in the field. The previous laureates include: Detlef Guenther (2003), Jean-Michel Mermet (2005), Klaus Heumann (2007), Annemie Bogaerts (2009), Frank Vanhaeke and Alfredo Sanz-Medel (jointly in 2011), Norbert Jakubowski (2013), Jörg Feldmann (2015) and Joanna Szpunar (2017).

Prof. Jose Ignacio Garcia Alonso

The 2019 Award winner is Prof. Jose Ignacio Garcia Alonso from the University of Oviedo, Spain.

Prof. García Alonso started working in plasma spectrochemistry during his PhD studies at the University of Oviedo (1981-1985) and continued during his post-doctoral stay in Plymouth (UK) (1/1986-7/1987 and 7/1989). In 1990-1995 he worked at the Institute for Transuranium Elements, Joint Research Centre in Karlsruhe (Germany). Then he returned to the University of Oviedo where he has been pursuing his research.

Prof. García Alonso has made substantial contributions in the development of plasma source techniques in the characterisation of nuclear materials, trace element speciation, and isotope dilution mass spectrometry. The main areas of applications have been environmental chemistry and metabolism, traceability and provenance studies.
